Dr. Ryan A. Smith received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles (1994), his M.S. from the University of Wisconsin (1989), and his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania (1987). His primary areas of research are workplace stratification and racial attitudes in America. His research is featured in the following journals: American Sociological Review, Work and Occupations, Social Problems, Sociological Quarterly, Social Forces, and the Annual Review of Sociology . His research interests include Race & Gender Stratification at Work, Race and Ethnic Relations, and the Effects of Diversity on Workplace Outcomes. Click here for a list of his publications. Professor Smith's work on racial attitudes in America has appeared in several book chapters and his research findings on race and authority have been cited in newspaper and magazine articles. He is currently writing a book on racial and ethnic authority hierarchies at work He is on the editorial board of Social Problems and has served as a reviewer for Administrative Science Quarterly, American Sociological Review, Work and Occupations, Human Resource Management Journal, and Rutgers University Press. Dr. Smith is a frequent guest lecturer, workshop leader, panelist and consultant on a variety of issues pertaining to managing workplace diversity, the role of race in America, and social policies designed to increase equality of opportunity in education and the workplace. Professor Smith is on the faculty of the School of Public Affairs at Baruch College, City University New York, as an Associate Professor. In addition, he is the 2002-2003 fellow at the W.E.B Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University. Dr. Smith's most recent and proudest accomplishment is the birth of his son Julius Austin Smith. |
